It was supposed to be a quiet birthday — just dinner, cake, and a few laughs.
My husband handed me a small, neatly wrapped box with a grin on his face.
His mother stood nearby, already holding up her new iPhone to record.

I opened the box, heart pounding… but it was empty.

The room burst into laughter — his, his mother’s, even his brother’s.
He chuckled, “Guess you’ll have to earn the phone this year!”

I froze, forcing a smile while the camera kept rolling.
Inside, I felt humiliated.

But then I noticed something — his mother’s brand-new phone.
The same one she’d bragged about for weeks.

I smiled sweetly and said,
“Oh, so this is a joke? You love jokes, right?”

He nodded, still laughing.
So I picked up his phone from the table, slipped it into the empty box, and calmly handed it back.

“Here,” I said, “you can open your surprise now.”

He frowned, confused — until he realized what I’d done.
I turned to his mother, still recording, and said,
“Please make sure you film this part too.”

Then I told him, in front of everyone,
“Last month I paid the electricity, the rent, and your car repair — all while you were ‘too busy’ to lift a finger. You think giving me an empty box is funny? Maybe this one will feel familiar.”

The room went dead silent.
His laughter vanished.
His mother stopped recording.

I stood up, kissed his cheek, and said,
“Happy birthday to me.”

Later that night, he apologized quietly and handed me a real gift — not a phone, but something better: respect.
And from that day on, no one ever tried to make me the punchline again.
