It was an ordinary day. The intercity bus driver, as always, was following his usual route — a smooth asphalt road winding through dense forest, with low shrubs along the roadside, and the air was heavy with heat.
Passengers were lazily dozing off, some listening to music, some reading; the road was calm, without incidents.
But then the driver noticed something strange ahead — right in the middle of the road stood two enormous silhouettes. He slowed down and squinted: an elephant and a little calf. They stood almost motionless, as if waiting for something.
As he drove closer, the driver immediately realized — something was wrong. The adult elephant suddenly turned toward the bus and began pacing back and forth across the road, sometimes running aside, sometimes coming back.
She moved frantically, as if trying to say or show something. There was anxiety… and aggression in her behavior.
The bus stopped. Some passengers started shouting, someone jumped out in panic. The driver thought the animal might attack — in the wild, such situations are unpredictable. But then one of the men noticed something and screamed in horror.
— Look at her trunk! Blood!
Everyone froze. The elephant, seeing that people had noticed, suddenly bolted into the forest. The calf ran after her.
No one understood what was happening. But the driver and a few concerned passengers decided to follow — something in the animal’s behavior told them it wasn’t rage, but a call for help.
Walking about 200 meters into the forest, they heard a low growl, sighs, and the crack of branches.
And there, in a small hollow, they saw something terrible: another elephant, likely a male, was lying on the ground, his leg caught in a massive steel trap. The animal was bleeding heavily and breathing hard.
The female elephant stood nearby, blood dripping from her trunk — she had clearly injured herself trying to free him from the trap. But she couldn’t do it.
The passengers acted instantly. One of them called the nearest wildlife protection center, others brought water, someone fetched a first aid kit from a backpack. Within forty minutes, veterinarians and rescuers arrived.
They freed the elephant, gave first aid, and later transported him to a wildlife rescue center. He was lucky — the wound was serious, but not fatal.
That day, the bus driver didn’t complete his route. Instead, he and the others became part of an incredible rescue story — a story where animals themselves came to people… for help.
